“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. “

~ Goethe

Life Begins At The End Of Your Comfort Zone

While browsing an airport bookstore this weekend I ran across that quote.  The words resonated with me as I had been struggling with the idea of writing my first blog.  I thought I would begin my blog by telling you all  about an anti aging therapy or new medicine, such as the new studies released this week confirming the benefits of Testosterone therapy or the just approved “women’s Viagra”.  And I promise to get to those as they are important topics.  But Goethe’s words struck me and inspired me in a completely different direction.

I was in the airport because I was attending college orientation with my son, Alex who is 19 (and of whom, by the way, I am very proud).  He will be attending Western Washington University and we spent two days there they taught him the art of leaving home and taught me the art of letting him. The campus was filled with energy fueled by the hopes and dreams of youth. It was contagious and I felt myself becoming energized just by being there.  And as I met with student after student I realized that the quality they shared, the quality that was so energizing and quite frankly even intoxicating was that they were bold.

Were they scared?  Yes! Anxious? Yes! Insecure? Yes!  Did it stop them? No way!  They each embarked on their journey with courage not knowing what it would be like and what the future would hold.  As we age it seems we start to play it safe and hedge our bets.  We develop our safe zones and routines that we believe we can rely on.  We stop allowing our selves to dive in headfirst to challenges.  We stop being bold.

So I learned a lot at college orientation.  I learned to start letting go of my son, and celebrate his “launch”.  I also learned to embrace being bold again.  Do something new even if you fail, push yourself, question authority, live your dreams.  Be Bold! And enjoy the genius, power and magic that truly is the fountain of youth.

Warm Regards,

Dr. Madeline
